PROM DATE JITTERS???

19 Mar

ImageSo, prom season is quickly approaching and the big question that’s been on the surface of every girl’s mind is “WHO AM I GOING TO GO TO PROM WITH??/ YIKES!!” While I understand the logic in wanting to go to prom with a date, I DON’T understand the NEED to go with a guy! What’s wrong with going to prom alone? And what it all comes down to is the lack of confidence girls have nowadays. Often times girls feel the need for a guy to be with them just so they could feel wanted and confident. Quite frankly, a guy shouldn’t boost your self esteem at all; YOU should just feel good about yourself and be self-assured. Although, a guy can enhance a girl’s confidence, a guy shouldn’t be the END ALL BE ALL! Ladies, realize that your BEAUTIFUL with or without a date. There’s nothing wrong with having a prom date BUT there’s nothing wrong with NOT having a prom date. If you so happen to go to prom alone, OWN IT & FEEL CONFIDENT! After all, I’ve made the conscious decision to go alone and i fully intend on having the BEST time ever!! All eyes on me!!!!

Breathe.

2 Sep

In the month of August, I decided to take a trip to Texas all by myself. I’ve spent time with my family, met new interesting people and I’ve learned more about the islamic religion, I learned some arabic words, and I’ve met a wonderful Vietnamese woman who has taught me how to say hello in that language. But, most of all I got the chance to just breathe! Being that I’m born and bread in NYC, I just needed that time away from the big city to “restore my sanity”. I say “restore my sanity” just because living in NYC can often times be INSANE! And sometimes you just need to get away in order to get some peace and quiet. This way you have time to actually think! That’s basically equivalent to therapy in itself. So, anyway I spent the last 2 weeks of August in Texas and I must say it was a major eye opener. I’ve re-evaluated my life in the short span of 2 weeks and I realized that I live in an enormous world. They’re people from different walks of life and totally different mindsets than I. The more I open my mind to other people’s way of life the less ignorant ill be. And believe it or not everyone’s ignorant in their own ways. Its apart of being human; no one is born knowing everything! Experience brings wisdom. The moral of this post is simply to promote self evaluation and expanding your mind. My brief time spent in Texas has taught me just that and I wanted to share this with my faithful readers! xoxoCosmogirl :*:*

The Lena Horne Legacy!

14 Aug

This morning I was subjected by my mother to watch the Gil Noble “like it is” show. And I must say, I was surprisingly impressed with the historical, Lena Horne! Prior to watching “like it is”, I never heard of her. But, I’m so honored to have learned about such a powerful/historical figure in the black community. Lena Horne was the first black woman to break into the Hollywood scene. She was a singer/actress/activist/feminist! She stood for justice and black empowerment! Horne’s first achieved fame began in the 1940s, she became a nightclub and recording star in the 1950s and according to the NY Times she made a “triumphant” return to the spotlight with a one-woman Broadway show in 1981. A woman as graceful, yet strong as Lena Horne deserves the utmost recognition! I decided to blog about her because I’m pretty sure that many teens my age haven’t heard of her. As a black female myself, I believe that it is inevitable to know such a phenomenal woman like Lena Horne. Not only was Lena beautiful, she had brains as well. From contributing to World War 2, to turning down shows in South Africa; Horne has been through it all! Beauty and brains are very rare in today’s society, that’s why I truly believe everyone MUST learn about the Lena Horne legacy! Unfortunately, Horne died in 2010, however her legacy lives on! She has inspired me to hold my ground and fight for what I believe in, not only as a woman but as a black person in America! I urge readers to look her up and find out more about this amazing woman!

A day at the Brooklyn Grange!

27 Jul

So yesterday, my fellow Teen Battle Chefs and I visited the Brooklyn Grange Garden (ironically located in Queens)! And I must say I LOVE this garden! It had a wide variety of vegetables and the cherry tomatoes were out of this world! I couldn’t believe that random people could actually come together and start a garden. After visiting the Brooklyn Grange I began to appreciate mother nature even more. There were chickens at this garden, beautiful plumped chickens!! There was also a beehive there, with the mother bee and all the other worker bees. It was such a humbling experience for me being able to witness mother nature first hand! I absolutely adored it and I would advise everyone to visit the closest garden to you and just spend some time there, watching mother nature do her duty! I’m so sure that you’ll enjoy your experience as much as I did!

I AM WOMAN!!

21 Jul

After watching Sex and the City2 for the hundredth time, I couldn’t help but be fascinated and inspired by the song the four girls sang when they were in Abudabi – “I am Woman: by Helen Reddy” This song should most definitely be the anthem song for every female across the nation! Check out the lyrics; its quite NEAT!

(Helen Reddy and Ray Burton)
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
‘Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land
But I’m still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman…
